The Kaskaskia Port District could soon apply for vital state grants.
Legislation sponsored by State Senator Paul Schimpf and passed Wednesday by the Illinois Senate would reverse a previous decision by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, which denied a grant request from the port district. DCEO officials said only local governments or municipalities could apply directly.
Schimpf's bill would allow the port districts to apply directly for grants to support economic development and infrastructure improvements.
The legislation now heads to the House.
