Jim Garvey is a Southern Illinois University Carbondale expert in fisheries and bighead carp.

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Jim Garvey, a Southern Illinois University Carbondale expert in fisheries and bighead carp, is available to talk with media on June 22, after the Illinois Department of Natural Resources unveils a new name for the fish known as the Asian carp.

Garvey, director of the Center for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences at SIU, has conducted research on bighead carp for more than 20 years, studying how harvest can reduce the movement of these invasive fishes into new waterways.

Reporters, photographers or news crews can arrange an interview with Garvey by contacting Tim Crosby, public information coordinator, at 618-534-3045 or crosby@siu.edu.
