Event Description

Musicians will join members of the original Southern Illinois All Stars for a musical reunion at The Vars

To celebrate their May 2001 taping of WSIU-TV’s “Studio A Café,” the Southern Illinois All Stars will reunite to celebrate Carbondale’s blues music heritage on Thursday, April 18 at The Varsity. Musicians who have entertained the community for the last 40 years will treat concertgoers to the sweet and familiar sounds of rhythm and blues in the venue’s Big Room. Films featuring significant figures in the region’s music history will be shown. Among the musicians playing are Larry Wood, Larry Robinson, Shadi Frick, Mel Goot, Dave Parrish, James Barnes, Scot Clough, Christian DeBiase, Brian Camden, Bruce Camden, Tawl Paul, Joe C, Joey Odum, DB, Kim McDaniels, Peyton Blewett, Eric Massey, John Shae, Dan Shigel and Tom Connelly. “The Last Blues Singer,” a documentary about ”Big Larry” Williams, the All Stars’ mentor, will be featured during the concert, as well as “Coming Home: Big Twist and the Mellow Fellows,” a PBS taping from April 1987. Tribute also will be paid to the late, great Sharon Clark, one of the unforgettable voices that drove this showcase band. Tawl Paul will also make an appearance at the show. The show is being produced by Sound Core Music and Video in Carbondale and will be recorded. It all begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 18. Doors and the Varsity Bar open at 6. Tickets are $10 in advance at Sound Core Music & Video on The Strip at 122 S. Illinois Ave. or online at www.thevarsitycenter.eventbrite.com. Tickets are not available in advance at the venue.
