The program is open to cisgender and transgender girls, and nonbinary and gender expansive youths.

Local summer camp Y’all Rock Carbondale is offering a summer mentorship program online instead of an in-person camp this year.

Formerly known as Girls Rock Carbondale, Y’all Rock is open to cis-and-transgender girls, non-binary and gender expansive youths who are entering 4th grade to 12th grade. The program will last for six weeks, allowing flexibility for those with less reliable access to computers or internet. Interested campers do not need any previous musical experience.

Executive Director Carson Cates says the experience will focus on individual performance rather than having the participants form a band.

“We’re actually going to focus on building personal confidence to get kids to where they can actually write and perform a song solo,” Cates said.

The program will also offer workshops on subjects like diversity, privilege, media literacy and other subjects along with the musical aspect.

The camp will begin on July 1st and culminate with a livestream performance on July 11th.

Applications for the camp are due May 28th. Families interested in applying or adults interested in becoming mentors can visit Y’all Rock Carbondale to sign up.
