Police investigate a deadly shooting Monday afternoon in Carbondale

The Carbondale Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting that occurred Monday afternoon in the 700 block of South Lewis Lane.

The incident prompted a shelter in place warning from police.

At 1:24 p.m. officers responded to the scene of the shooting and found a gunshot victim and learned the suspect fled from the scene.

The victim was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale for further treatment and later died from the injuries. The identity of the victim will not be released until family members can be notified.

The suspect is described as a black male. He was wearing a mask covering his face, with a black jacket, a green shirt and green shorts. The suspect was last seen running north toward east College Street.

Carbondale Police investigators are currently speaking with a person of interest in the investigation. The investigation has revealed the suspect and victim are known acquaintances of one another.
