The Mt Vernon Police Department arrested two men overnight on felony charges.

At 10:22 Monday night, 19-year-old Israel Garrett fled from police after a traffic stop at 15th and Casey.

Officers caught up with Garrett in the area of 15th and College and saw him get rid of a bag. During a search of the bag officers located a loaded 9mm handgun.

Garrett was taken into custody on charges of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Resisting Arrest.

Then around 2 a.m., officers arrived at a residence in the 900 block of Salem Road and saw 36-year-old James Litteral fleeing with blood on his clothing.

They took him into custody a few block away.

Their investigation revealed Litteral attacked two people after he forced his way into the residence through a locked door.

One of the victims was taken to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.

Litteral is charged with Home Invasion, Aggravated Battery, Domestic Battery, and Resisting Arrest.
