The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department has released more information about a shooting incident Wednesday involving one of its deputies.

Just before 12:30 Wednesday afternoon, a Deputy initiated a traffic stop on Interstate 55 for a registration violation. A brief pursuit ended after the vehicle crashed on State Route D.

The Sheriff's Department reports the driver -- now identified as James Brian Langley -- aggressively exited the vehicle while holding a knife.

The preliminary investigation revealed the deputy used his department-issued Taser, which had no effect on Langley, who continued to approach the deputy.

The Deputy then fired his department-issued firearm, striking Langley one time. Langley later died of his injuries at a local hospital.

The investigation continues with the help of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
