Carbondale's Curbside Christmas Tree Recycling program is accepting decoration-free Christmas trees through January 28.

City Arborist Mark McDaniel says the program helps in several ways.

"It's not going to the landfill, and I'm happy that one, it's being placed on some backroad or side road or, you know just dumpin' it somewhere."

McDaniel says Carbondale residents can put their trees on the curb on their normal recycling and refuse days and the city will pick it up and either grind it up for mulch, or give it to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for use as fish attractors in local lakes.

City residents can also take their trees to one of three drop-off locations in the city: the Parrish Parking Lot, the Public Works Complex or the Attucks Park Parking lot. For more information you can call 457-3275.
