SIU Football Tries to Nail Down FCS Postseason Spot

The SIU football team finishes the regular season Saturday on Senior Day at Saluki Stadium against Youngstown State.

With seven wins so far, the Salukis are firmly in the discussion for the FCS playoffs.

Head Coach Nick Hill says he doesn't worry about all the potential playoff scenarios, but he's confident a win over the Penguins will mean a second straight postseason birth for the Dawgs.

"Really that's the focus, not who were playing. That's what our administration and all that's for, as far as figuring all that stuff out. We've got a job to do. Our players have a job to do. It's about being focused and doing that."

The Salukis can finish in a 4-way tie for the Missouri Valley Football Conference regular season championship if they beat Youngstown State and if South Dakota wins at North Dakota State.

With three straight winning seasons, SIU head football coach Nick Hill is moving up the career ranks for coaching victories in Carbondale.

Hill now has 30 wins as the head of the Saluki program, tied for sixth all-time in school history.

The Du Quoin native and former Saluki quarterback credits the players from his first recruiting class in 2016 for helping turn things around.

"Trying to get these guys to come to a program that hadn't won in really 7 or 8 years and then a couple of years of not winning and still believing the vision and the off-season program when it's not really the easiest thing to do. And they've committed."

Hill can tie Abe Martin for 5th on the all-time list with a win this Saturday on Senior Day against Youngstown State. Kickoff is at noon.
