A 16-year-old has been arrested in Mt. Vernon on gun and drug charges.

Police say they initiated a traffic stop Monday night in the 3900 block of Broadway after observing the vehicle commit two traffic violations.

During the traffic stop the officers made contact with a 16 year old passenger and determined the 16 year old was in possession of a loaded handgun. An additional search located quantities of cocaine and cannabis in the 16 year old's possession.

The teen was arrested on charges of Armed Violence, Possession of Cannabis with Intent to Deliver between 30 and 500 grams, Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Deliver between 1 gram and 15 grams, and Unlawful Use of a Firearm.

The 16 year old was detained at the Franklin County Juvenile Detention facility pending court in Jefferson County.
