The USDA has approved an $8.5 million loan to Johnson County to help construct a new courthouse in Vienna.

County board chair Gary Brumley says he had hoped construction would start this summer, but the price of materials is delaying it.

"The main concern right now, and we had a meeting with our architect probably last month, with building materials and the prices of that escalating, we're not really in a hurry to go out here and start putting out bids for contractors to put a bid out."

Brumley hopes the price of materials has dropped by early 2022 to put out the bids and possibly break ground on the project in the spring of next year.

He says the original cost estimate of the new courthouse was $9.4 million.

The current courthouse building is 150 years old.
