The Red Cross and the American Cancer Society are teaming up to encourage people to donate blood.
The partnership comes at a critical time. The Red Cross is seeing fewer donations of blood and platelets, while many cancer patients are undergoing treatments or procedures that were delayed due to the pandemic. Red Cross Regional Communications Director Sharon Watson said that need, combined with an increase in accidents during summer months, can lead to shortages.
“We constantly have a need for blood for cancer patients, and that's something that many people may not realize, just how much blood is required as people go through cancer treatment and that's a constant need that we always have,” she said.
