White supremacists

A flyer is floating around social media outing a student at SIU-Carbondale as a Nazi sympathizer.

The flyer claims the student is attending school on a scholarship and that students should contact the Financial Aid Department to demand SIU-C revoke the scholarship immediately.

The Carbondale Racial Justice Coalition says flyers promoting white supremacy were placed on vehicles parked Tuesday at John A. Logan College.

On its Facebook page, the coalition posted a photograph of the flyer that included a headline in bold type that read, "It's Alright to be White."

Someone has been posting flyers promoting a white-supremacist group across the Northern Illinois University campus, Acting President Lisa Freeman informed the community by email Tuesday.

She said the flyers are being removed as they are discovered because they violate the NIU posting policy.

“Hatred is not something that aligns with the principles of NIU,” Freeman wrote.

A new measure has been introduced in Illinois as a response to the deadly summer rally of white nationalists in Charlottesville. La Shawn Ford, a House Democrat from Chicago - is the sponsor of what is called the "Abolition of Confederate Symbols Act." He says no monument or image honoring the Confederate States should be on public property.

Hate crimes will be more punishable under a new law the governor signed this week.
The measure was a result of suggestions from the state’s bi-partisan Holocaust and Genocide Commission.
