Officials say a southern Illinois man has died when high winds blew a power transmission pole onto his pickup truck.


Winter Weather will spread across the region Wednesday, making travel difficult in some areas.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch is in effect until 7:00pm for the following counties in Illinois:  Alexander, Gallatin, Hardin, Jackson, Johnson, Massac, Pope, Pulaski, Saline, Union and Williamson. 

The following Missouri Counties are also included in the Tornado Watch: Bollinger, Butler, Cape Girardeau, New Madrid, Scott, Perry, Stoddard and Wayne.  In Kentucky the watch area includes: Ballard, Caldwell, Calloway, Crittenden, Graves, McCracken, Henderson, Carlisle, Christian, Hickman, Hopkins, Livingston, Trigg, Union and Webster.

Jefferson County officials say Ameren is working to restore power to more than 500 customers in Jefferson County.    Most of the outage is reported in the Mt. Vernon and Bluford areas.   The outage is the result of several spans of downed lines.  Ameren expects to have electrical service in the area restored by 7:00pm tonight.

The National Weather Service says showers and thunderstorms over the last week - combined with expected wet weather - have put the region at risk for flash flooding.

The National Weather Service in Paducah has  canceled the tornado watch for Franklin, Hamilton, Jackson, Jefferson, Perry, Wabash, Wayne counties in southern Illinois and for Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, and Perry counties in southeast Missouri.

Dangerous cold weather is gripping the quad-state area Monday and it's likely going to continue for the next 24 hours.

On top of the extremely cold temperatures gripping all of Illinois, thousands are also without power.

All Franklin County government offices will be closed on Monday because of the weather.

Warming Centers will be open Monday across southern Illinois.
