Governor Bruce Rauner is creating a committee to recommend how to fight Legionnaires’ disease at a state-run veterans’ home in Quincy.

Rauner spent the last week living at the facility after a WBEZ investigation into his administration’s handling of three outbreaks over the last three years.

Illinois lawmakers are holding a hearing on the Legionnaires disease outbreak at the Quincy Veteran's Home.

Legislators are questioning state officials about the how, what and when of the deadly outbreak that has killed 13 people since 2015. They're also looking at solutions to prevent more deaths such as replacing all the pipes in the home since the bacteria can be found in plumbing.

That’s even though it’s struggled with persistent Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks.

That’s after a WBEZ Public Radio investigation showed residents there continued to get sick and die from Legionnaires’ disease three years after a major outbreak.

Illinois public health officials delayed informing the public for nearly a week about a deadly 2015 Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at a state veterans’ home in Quincy despite knowing the facility was facing “the beginning of an epidemic,” according to internal emails from Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office obtained by WBEZ.

Dozens of elderly residents who come from all over the state to live at the Illinois Veterans’ Home in Quincy have fallen ill over the last three years. 13 have died. The problem is Legionnaires’ disease, a form of pneumonia.
