WSIU Names Local Winners in International Art Contest

Winners Hail from Eldorado, Alto Pass, and Du Quoin, Illinois

Carbondale, Ill.WSIU Public Broadcasting, a service of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and the SIU College of Mass Communication and Media Arts have announced the names of local winners who submitted original artwork to the Prix Jeunesse International Art Contest based on the theme, “What It Means To Be Me”.

More than 150 local entries were submitted, with winners selected in three age categories. WSIU presented local winners with art toolsets and drawing paper. Winning artwork has been forwarded to Munich, Germany to be presented along side art from all over the world in an exhibit at Prix Jeunesse International, a festival celebrating the best children’s media worldwide. The festival will be held in Munich in May 2016. An international jury will select twelve winners whose art will be produced as posters, and three grand prize winners who will receive trophies.

Area winners are:

Ja’Nae Roberts, age six, Eldorado Grade School, Eldorado, Ill. who says “I drew myself. I made a big face, little eyeballs, purple nose. I am happy. I feel good about me.”

Gabriel Demmin, age seven, of Alto Pass, Ill. Gabriel describes his artwork as “Me leaning against a tree fishing with my dog, Copper. This is what I like to do.”

Katilyn Simmons, age 13, Du Quoin Middle School Art Club, Du Quoin, Ill., who created “An abstract portrait of myself. When you first meet a person, they may act or speak differently as opposed to when you get to know them.”

WSIU is grateful to the instructors and program leaders who supported this art contest, including Candace Campanella, Du Quoin Middle School; Tina Carpenter, Boys & Girls Club of Carbondale; Christine Mattingly, Unity Point School in Carbondale; and Kristi Smith, Eldorado Elementary School.
