Free Community Film Screening This Saturday, March 29

SIU College of Mass Communication & Media Arts, WSIU to Present "The Trials of Muhammad Ali"

Carbondale, Ill. -- SIU Carbondale's College of Mass Communications and Media Arts (MCMA), WSIU Public Broadcasting, and the Carbondale Public Library continue Community Cinema this month with a free screening and discussion of the film The Trials of Muhammad Ali on Saturday, March 29 at 2:30pm at the library, 405 West Main in Carbondale.

Dr. Novotny Lawrence, an Associate Professor in SIU's Department of Radio, TV & Digital Media, and John Holmes, a retired member of the Prison & Family Ministry of Lutheran Services of Illinois, will lead a discussion after the film. Refreshments will be provided.

The Trials of Muhammad Ali is a feature-length documentary film covering Ali's toughest bout, his battle to overturn the five-year prison sentence he received for refusing U.S. military service. The film zeroes in on the years 1967 to 1970, when Ali lived in exile within the U.S., stripped of his heavyweight belt and banned from boxing, sacrificing fame and fortune on principle. The fury he faced from an American public, enraged by his opposition to the Vietnam War and unwilling to accept his conversion to Islam, has global implications for generations now coming of age amidst contemporary fissures involving freedom, faith, and military conflict.

Additional details about the film are available at http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/trials-of-muhammad-ali.

The remaining schedule is as follows: Medora(April 26) and The New Black (May 31). Each screening will feature a facilitator and guest speakers who will participate in a discussion with the audience about the topics raised in the films.

Community Cinema is a groundbreaking civic engagement initiative from the Independent Television Service (ITVS) that brings to light unforgettable stories about unique individuals, underrepresented communities, or pivotal moments in history. The film screenings and discussions are designed to bring together leading organizations, community members, and public television stations to discuss and get involved in key social issues of our time.
