Public Invited to Family Night at the Park on July 25

WSIU to Bring Literacy Van, Children’s Activities & PBS KIDS Character Super WHY to Pinckneyville City Park

Carbondale, Ill. – WSIU Public Broadcasting, a service of Southern Illinois University, in partnership with the Pinckneyville Public Library and other Pinckneyville public service agencies, will participate in the 6th Annual Family Night in the Park on Friday, July 25 from 5-9pm at Pinckneyville City Park, 711 Fairground Road in Pinckneyville, Illinois.

Families will meet and have photo opportunities with PBS KIDS costume character Super WHY, enjoy outdoor activities and interactive games on mobile devices, and receive PBS KIDS giveaways. WSIU’s colorful PBS KIDS Outreach Van also will be on site. Provided by Child Care Resource & Referral at John A. Logan College, the van features PBS KIDS characters from children’s programs such as Super WHY, Martha Speaks, and Sesame Street and boasts state-of-the-art technology to assist WSIU with its educational outreach activities.

Since 2008, the van has traveled thousands of miles through over 50 counties across southern Illinois and southeastern Missouri to engage children in literacy skill-building activities.

“WSIU’s Literacy Van brings a modern, up-to-date approach to increasing literacy, math, and science learning to all hometown events,” says Beth Spezia, “In a rural area like ours, with widespread needs and far-flung communities, it's a wonderful tool to take public broadcasting on the road. It also serves as a great reminder that WSIU is there to support children with media projects that are responsive to entire families.”

For more information about WSIU’s participation in Family Night at the Park, contact Beth Spezia at (618) 453-5595, beth.spezia@wsiu.org.
