WSIU, Carbondale Public Library to Present Free Community Cinema Film Screening on January 17

“A Path Appears” To Address Gender-Based Violence & Oppression

Carbondale, Ill.WSIU Public Broadcasting and the Carbondale Public Library will present a free screening and discussion of one part of the three-part Independent Lens film A Path Appears on Saturday, January 17 at 2:30pm at the Carbondale Public Library, 405 W. Main.

Presented as part of WSIU's participation in Community Cinema, a community engagement initiative from the Independent Television Service (ITVS) and Independent Lens, A Path Appears follows Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn and a group of dedicated actor/advocates to Colombia, Haiti, Kenya, and throughout the United States. The group uncovers the harshest forms of gender inequality, the devastating impact of poverty, and the ripple effects that follow, including sex trafficking, teen-pregnancy, gender-based violence, and child slavery. They also examine effective solutions being forged to combat these issues.

Guests at the screening on January 17 will have the opportunity to participate in a discussion connecting issues in the film to issues within our community, as well as an opportunity to win the book "A Path Appears: Transforming Lives, Creating Opportunity" by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. Discussion moderators include: Cataria Alves, RCS Adolescent Counselor at The Women's Center, Susie Toliver, Crime Victim Advocate with the Carbondale Police Department, and  Martha Cropper, President and CEO of Teach My Kenyan Children, a faith-based nonprofit (501([c]3) committed to helping rural Kenyans improve their lives through education.
