West Frankfort Schools Step Up Security Measures Friday

Logo

The recent school shooting in Florida has area schools asking what they can do to better protect their students from a possible attack.
Matt Donkin, the Superintendent of Schools for West Frankfort, says they are always brainstorming new ways to keep the schools safe, and Friday, Frankfort Community High School students had to go through metal detection before class.

"Our district uses a variety of strategies and actions. It may not be the same thing every day, but to keep everybody on their toes and spot check. That's what we do. One of those things that we do involves searching with metal detectors, which is something we did at our high school today. We have no active threat."

Donkin says metal detection is a security measure the school district has used on and off over the years.

"We also encourage in all of these situations, is, I know people are concerned and parents are concerned, and students are concerned, and staff is concerned, is if they hear anything, to please pass it along so that we can investigate it."

Donkin says they are working with local law enforcement and are always working to get the most up to date training so they can maintain a safe school environment to help students get an education.
