Veto Session Will End Early

The Fall Veto session will end a day early.   Legislative leaders announced Tuesday that neither chamber of the Illinois General Assembly will be in session Thursday.

Chicago Democratic state Rep. Joseph Lyons was presiding over the House when he announced there would be no session Thursday.   That means Wednesday will be the last day of the Legislature's fall veto session.  The Senate already canceled plans to convene Thursday.   It's also another indication there is no consensus on major legislative issues, like a fix for state pension systems or an agreement to expand legalized gambling.    Those will likely be settled in the first week of January before a new General Assembly is sworn in.  Northbrook Democratic state Rep. Elaine Nekritz says she will announce a new pension remedy Wednesday but she hasn't said what that will entail.

Illinois lawmakers return to the Capitol Tuesday for what was scheduled to be the final three days of the Legislature's fall session.   Among bills awaiting House action is a potential override of Gov. Pat Quinn's budget vetoes that would force the shutdown of state facilities. The Senate also sent the House a plan to require publicly traded corporations to publicize their tax bills.

A vote on legalizing marijuana for medicinal use could be called in the House.  The Senate has passed a measure  to allow illegal immigrants to obtain a special state drivers license.  That measure now goes to the House.
