US Postal Service Consolidation Plan

US Postal Service

The U.S. Postal Service is out with a modified plan to consolidate hundreds of mail processing centers across the country.
The updated plan released Thursday calls for a study of moving the mail processing operations from Carbondale to Springfield.  A plan released in February called for Carbondale's processing operation to be absorbed by the Evansville Indiana facility.  Postal Service spokesperson Valerie Welsch says the corporation's consolidation strategy for Carbondale is fluid.  Welsch says the Carbondale facility could be consolidated as soon as this summer.  The updated plan also calls for a study of moving the Centralia processing center to Springfield and the Effingham facility to Champaign. Welsch says the downsizing will reduce the size of the U.S.
Postal Service workforce by 13,000 employees to offset a loss of $6.5 billion so far this year.
