UPDATE: Charges Filed in Carbondale Shooting

A Cape Girardeau man has been charged in a shooting incident early Friday morning on South Illinois Avenue in Carbondale.

The Jackson County State's Attorney says 26-year-old Darrion Jake is charged with aggravated battery with a firearm. He is accused of shooting SIU student Dexter Lee in the abdomen. Lee was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The state's attorney says Carbondale Police took two other men into custody, but they have been released pending further investigation.

PREVIOUS STORY:

Three men have been arrested in connection with a Friday morning shooting on South Illinois Avenue in Carbondale.

Carbondale Police say they have arrested 28-year-old Ternell Albritton and 43-year-old Robert Glass, both of Carbondale, as well as 26-year-old Darrion Jake of Cape Girardeau.

Jake is being held on suspicion of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and Mob Action.  Albritton and Glass could face Mob Action charges.  All three are incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail.

Police responded to the area known as "the strip" a little before 1:00 am Friday.   Officers found a group of about 200 people in the road and observed several fights taking place.  Police used pepper spray to help deter the crowd and clear the street.

Police say an altercation took place inside a nearby business, and the victim was shot in the abdomen. He was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

FRIDAY'S STORY:

Carbondale Police are investigating an early morning shooting that took place on South Illinois Avenue.

Police responded to the area known as "the strip" a little before 1:00 am Friday. Officers found a group of about 200 people in the road and observed several fights taking place.  Police used pepper spray to help deter the crowd and clear the street.

Police say an altercation took place inside a nearby business.  One individual had a gun and fired one round which struck the victim in the abdomen.  Police say the individual was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and treated for non-life threatening injuries.   Police describe the suspect as a black male wearing light colored shirt. 

An investigation continues.  Anyone with information is urged to contact the Carbondale Police Department or call the Crime stoppers line at 618-549-COPS.
