I was recently walking on a trail on the edge of IDNR land near Kinkaid Lake . I had just finished setting up my audio recorder when something unusual stopped me. It was prehistoric sounding. . .I have heard this before, several years ago. . I played this recording to Rhonda Rothrock and Vicki-Lang-Mendenhall with the Southern Illinois Audubon Society and, sure enough, they said it was a Yellow-Billed Cuckoo., and that these migrants are normally gone at this time of year. Maybe they were still around because abundance of a certain loud insect. This photograph was taken by Katie Bryant of the Southern Illinois Birding Group. So, if you go to the forest this weekend you just might hear a cuckoo that does not reside in your Grandfather's Clock....for WSIU radio, I'm Kevin Boucher.
