Illinois State Police say tractor-trailers collided Tuesday morning on Interstate 57 in Jefferson County.
Troopers say the accident occurred at 10:23 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the interstate at milepost 85.
The driver of one of the semis, 32-year-old Alejandro Echavarria Escamilla, of Hidalgo, Texas received major injuries and was eventually transferred to a regional medical facility.
The preliminary investigation indicates one of the semis was parked on the right shoulder due to a mechanical issue. Escamilla's semi collided with the parked semi, hit a guardrail before overturning and coming to rest in a ditch.
Escamilla was cited for improper driving on the shoulder.
