Two Eclipse Planning Meetings Scheduled in Southern Illinois

Map

In just under a year, much of our region will be the focus of a rare solar eclipse.

A lot of planning is going into preparing for an influx of thousands of people from around the world.
The Southernmost Illinois Tourism Bureau is hosting a pair of planning meetings to help get everyone on the same page. The bureau's Cindy Cain says the biggest challenge will be not knowing exactly what to expect.

"I believe that it's mainly just in terms of the unknown of the depth of the visitors that will travel. And because there are so many different factors, one obviously being weather, another being, it's not like someone has to make one reservation to attend one sight so that it's known in advance. Obviously, people can just drive in."

Cain says this is about informing people about what's coming.

"Basically, we're just wanting to help get the word out to people to be aware and do what you can to take full advantage of this great opportunity."

The first meeting is this Thursday  (Sept. 22) in the Robert Gregg Technology Building at Southeastern Illinois College in Harrisburg. The second will be September 29th in the River Room at Shawnee Community College in Ullin. Both meetings will run from 3-7 p.m.

To RSVP, call the Southernmost Illinois Tourism Bureau at 618-833-9928.
