Authorities in southern Illinois say a man and his 13-year-old grandson are dead after a boating incident on Rend Lake.

In a news release, the Franklin County Sheriff's Department says 63-year-old Terry Calvert had taken his two grandchildren from Collinsville fishing on Monday. His 13-year-old grandson fell in.

Authorities say Calvert tried to help him get back in the boat and jumped into the water to try and rescue him, but fell victim to the cold water.

The other 11-year-old grandson remained on the boat and received help from nearby fishermen.

Calvert was pronounced dead at a hospital. Search and rescue divers later found the 13-year-old and brought him to shore. He was later pronounced dead.
