Western Illinois University Athletic Director Tommy Bell is the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
SIU President Randy Dunn made the announcement Friday afternoon during a news conference at Saluki Stadium.
Dunn said Bell has three strong attributes that made him the right choice for the position.
"First of all, athletics leadership and fundraising experience. Second, a commitment that was deep and ongoing to Saluki athletics. Finally, the understanding of a strong, Division I program to a national, mid-major, research, prominent university."
Bell previously worked for SIU from 2001 to 2007 when he oversaw fund raising for Saluki Athletics during one of the department's greatest eras.
Bell says SIU has a great tradition, and while you should celebrate the past, the Salukis cannot afford to live in it.
"It's now the time for the current generation and future generations of players and coaches to achieve greatness. Ultimately, it's my job as athletic director to create an environment where things can be achieved by great people."
Bell also had a message for Saluki fans.
"I'm going to make sure out staff and student-athletes know how important you are in our success. We will not take you for granted...no one. We're all about family. Your voice matters to us. You're our customers. We'll be transparent with you and we want you to let us know how we're doing."
Bell was one of four finalists invited to the SIU-C campus for interviews last month. He replaces Mario Moccia, who left the university to take the same position at New Mexico State University.
Dunn says they are still working to finalize Bell's contract and start date. His appointment must be approved by the SIU Board of Trustees. That is expected to take place at the board's May 14 meeting.
