A southern Illinois woman is not giving up in her effort to get the Tamms Correctional Center reopened.
In the spring, Marsha Griffin gathered petition signatures to reopen the supermax facility, she then delivered them to lawmakers just before the end of their legislative session in May.
Now, the Jonesboro school teacher is starting a letter writing campaign in hopes of changing Governor Pat Quinn's mind about the closing the prison.
Griffin contends the closing of Tamms has led to an increase in violence at other prisons across the state as those inmates were placed back in the general population.
In light of recent staff assaults at the Shawnee and Menard Correctional Centers in southern Illinois, Griffin is holding a prayer rally to show support for frontline workers and their families.
The rally will be Saturday at 2 p.m. adjacent to the Shawnee and Vienna prisons. Everyone is invited.
