Field workers with the Federal Emergency Management Agency were in Harrisburg Monday to begin documenting damage to homes and businesses from tornadoes that hit the area last Wednesday. The assessments began on West Sullivan Street in the southeastern part of town, hard hit by Wednesday's EF-4 tornado. One of the residents who had her home destroyed on that street is Mickey Pavelonis. Pavelonis says she and her husband were awakened by their greyhound dog early Wednesday morning. She says they will level what's remaining of their house and rebuild. She says they've lived in that same location for 40 years.
The Pavelonis' are currently living with their son, who lives just a few blocks away. His home also sustained damage, but is livable. The FEMA assessments are expected to take at least two to three days.
They are the next step in the state obtaining federal disaster relief.
FEMA assessment teams are reviewing storm damage in Saline, Gallatin, Massac, Pulaski, Union, Perry and Randolph counties.
