A Chicago state senator wants to mandate that firearm owners carry liability insurance.
State Senator Ira Silverstein introduced the bill this week. It would amend the state’s Firearms Owners Identification Card Act to require anyone applying for a FOID Card to carry a minimum of $100,000 in liability insurance.
The revision would give State Police the authority to deny a new application or revoke an existing FOID Card if the gun owner does not have the required liability insurance. The liability insurance must specifically cover any damages resulting from negligent or willful acts involving the use of a firearm while owned or carried by the person.
The legislation is SB-2646.
