Southern Illinois University Carbondale will use $1.5 million state capital construction funds to upgrade and add lighting to the campus.
Governor Pat Quinn announced the funding Thursday, and says it will help increase safety at the school.
“We’re all in this together. And safety is real important, and making this investment today is going to make this campus safer, and we need to keep looking together on every way possible to make sure everyone feels safe and sound.”
The LED lights will either upgrade or be added in several areas on campus, including what’s known as the “Brightway Path,” around Thompson Woods, and around Old Main. Chancellor Paul Sarvela says the money will mean 400 new lights for the areas.
“The lighting is much brighter, and it covers a much broader area. The campus is just going to be far more safe.”
SIU will use $500,000 of its own infrastructure money towards the project, which is already underway.
