State Exploring Privatizing World Shooting Complex

A southern Illinois lawmaker says he wants the state to better utilize the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta.

State Senator Dave Luechtefeld says he'd like to see the one-of-a-kind facility used every weekend for various shooting events. In 2014, the complex is scheduled to host events on 42 of the 52 weeks...most of them on weekends. Although some of the events are private corporate outings.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources currently oversees its operation. The Okawville republican says he'd like to find out if the state or a private company would be the best option to attract more business to the complex.

The Bloomington Pantagraph recently reported it's possible the state could turn the operation of the complex over to a private contractor. The article said IDNR director Marc Miller wants to determine if privatization would save the state money and boost economic development in southern Illinois.

Luechtefeld says the state needs to be cautious when looking into privatization. He says a private contractor could possibly market the site more effectively to shooting enthusiasts, but he says the state made a $50 million investment that can't be ignored.

The Department of Natural Resources sent a letter to potential operators asking for their comments and suggestions by October 2nd.
