SIUC Faculty Association Reaches Tentative Contract Deal

The SIU-Carbondale Faculty Association and the school's administration have reached a tentative deal on a new collective bargaining agreement.

The new contract will run through June 30th, 2018.
Faculty Association President Dave Johnson says the deal does not include salary increases for the approximate 500 tenured and tenure-track faculty represented by the union. But, he says there is a provision to re-open the salary discussion if the state produces a full-year budget for higher education.

"So, at that point, will face that issue again. And if in our view the university can afford to help faculty catch up with raises that we haven't gotten for a number of years, we'll pursue that."

Johnson says the most important provision in the new deal may be a revision of how the university would make program changes.

"There's a lot of talk around campus about the need - perhaps - to make changes in programs, mergers or perhaps even eliminate academic programs. This new contract will ensure that any changes are not made in a hasty fashion and that they're made with adequate time for full consultation with faculty."

SIU-C spokesperson Rae Goldsmith says both sides worked to find common ground.

"Both sides recognized that we are in unusual fiscal times. They approached it collaboratively, knowing that we have to work toward shared solutions. And I think the tone of the negotiations and bargaining really helped lead to resolution."

The Faculty Association members approved the deal this week. It still must be ratified by the Board of Trustees.

Negotiations continue between the administration and unions representing non-tenure track faculty, graduate assistants and civil service employees.
