Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Chancellor says enrollment will be down this fall, but she’s still pointing to bright spots in the Freshman and Sophomore classes as reasons to be optimistic for the future.

Chancellor Rita Cheng says this year’s incoming freshman class is smaller across the nation. She says a population dip means recruiters have to work even harder to get students to come to SIU.

Cheng points to new student programs like University 101 and the University College as keys to making sure students make a successful transition to college life, meaning they’ll be more apt to finish school and move forward.  Students are moving on to campus this week, with Fall Semester classes starting on Monday.
