SIUC Chancellor Battling Cancer

SIU

SIU Carbondale's new leader says his schedule may be modified, as he battles cancer.

In a message sent to the campus community Tuesday, Chancellor Paul Sarvela revealed he is battling a rare form of carcinoma.

The 54-year-old says he has been given an excellent prognosis, although his work schedule will be somewhat modified as he goes through treatment over the next few months at  Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine.

Sarvela says this is a good reminder about the importance of staying on top of routine annual physicals. He says his tumor would not have been detected and treated if he had not visited his family doctor.
