Spending controls are tightening at SIU Carbondale, as the school is still without state funding for this fiscal year.
SIUC Interim Chancellor Brad Colwell sent a letter to the campus on Monday, detailing a hiring freeze, a review of "extra help" positions, and a delay in travel and purchasing.
Colwell says it's a way to help the SIU limp along without state money. He says the guidelines may be relaxed when a budget is passed and cash starts flowing again from Springfield.
At the same time, Colwell says the campus focus on students must continue - he says graduate assistants are being hired for the spring semester.
