The Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees has approved two student fees for the upcoming fall semester on the Carbondale Campus.

Trustees met Tuesday during a special meeting in Edwardsville.

Trustees approved two student fee proposals.  One is a $9 increase in the student intercollegiate athletic fee.  That increase would bring the fee that supports SIU Carbondale athletic teams and facilities to $315 per semester.

The other  is a new $9 per semester student fee to support the Daily Egyptian newspaper.  The fee is expected to generate more than $260,000 during FY-2015.

Trustees also approved interim appointments for Jason Green as the Dean of the College of Business at an annual salary of nearly $267,000;  Cheryl Jarvis as the interim associate Dean for the College of Business at an annual salary of $231,00; and Jane Swanson as the interim Dean for the College of Liberal Arts at an annual salary of almost $155,000.

Trustees voted down a one-year, $1.4-Million contract extension for marketing and communications services with Chicago based Lipman Hearne Inc.

An interim Chancellor for SIU Carbondale could be named in the next few weeks.  During a special meeting in Edwardsville, SIU Trustees met with system President Randy Dunn to talk about their next steps, just days after Carbondale campus Chancellor Rita Cheng was named President of Northern Arizona University. Dunn says he'll begin talking with potential candidates for the interim position immediately, and hopes that person will work to get the campus ready for a new leader.  Trustee Chair Randal Thomas says he and other board members have faith in the process as it's unfolding: "We are very confident in the new President that we've hired, and we'll take his recommendations and go with those."

Dunn says an interim chancellor will likely be named in time for the next scheduled Board meeting, which is set for July 24th in Springfield, and a process for searching for a permanent chancellor will be announced soon after that.  Chancellor Cheng has not yet announced her last day in Carbondale. Her first day at Northern Arizona University is August 15th.
