SIU Administrators say a delay in reporting to the U.S. Department of Education has landed them on a financial warning list – but they’re hopeful they’ll be off that list soon.
The Department this week released a list of more than 500 colleges and universities that failed its “Financial Responsibility Test” – and SIU Carbondale is on it.
Spokeswoman Rae Goldsmith says it dates back to an audit due in 2012 that wasn’t filed on time.
“There were a lot of issues that were outside of our control, none of them were related to the audit itself. We filed late, and that got us on the list. Once we’re on the list, we’re there for three years.”
Goldsmith says making the list means SIUC has to complete a few more steps in the process of getting financial aid money, but she says the change did not affect students in any way.
If reports are filed on time and in order this year, Goldsmith says SIU should be off the Department of Ed’s watch list next year.
