A new study from the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute shows that almost half of Illinois voters are opposed to fracking.
It shows almost 49% of voters opposed fracking while almost 32% were in favor and 20% were unsure.
The institute's John Jackson says the number of people unsure on the issue is discouraging.
"Well, it is worrisome because there's been an awful lot of coverage of fracking in the media over the last two or three years - pretty intense coverage in southern Illinois and much of downstate. Keep in mind, southern Illinois is the most likely site for this to take place, if the oil companies decide to do it."
Many opponents of fracking are concerned about its effect on the environment. Many of those in favor of the process like the idea of the economic growth it could bring.
The poll of one thousand registered voters took place from February 28th to March 10th and has a margin of error of three percentage points.
