Third and fourth year general surgery residents at the SIU School of Medicine can get plenty of hands-on experience through a new partnership with Southern Illinois Healthcare.
The new Rural Surgery Residency Program allows the residents to work on a one-to-two month rotation under the guidance of select southern Illinois surgeons in the SIH network. Jaclyn Wierzbicki of Naperville is a fourth year general surgery resident who started the program on July 1st. She says getting to work with professionals in real world settings is quite valuable.
Dr. Satyadeep Bhattacharya is the newly appointed assistant program director for the residency program. He says this will be help prepare the residents for professional life and hopefully attract some of them to work in rural hospitals. Bhattacharya says the program also offers SIH a chance to see future doctors up close and determine if they are potential hires for the organization down the road.
