Severe Weather Rakes Southern Illinois

National Weather Service

This morning's severe weather appears to have been concentrated in Saline County... where emergency crews remain on the scene of major damage in Harrisburg and surrounding areas.

Emergency Management Officials are asking people to stay away from Harrisburg as rescue operations and damage assessments are ongoing... it's unclear just how hard the community was hit and experts will be on the ground today to take a closer look.

Thousands of Ameren Illinois customers are without power this morning, stretching from the Mississippi River to the Ohio... crews are working on downed power lines, fallen tree limbs and other problems.

The power outages have prompted school closings in Dongola, Marion and Cobden.

Elsewhere around the region, minor and scattered damage is being reported including some structural damage in southeast Williamson County... downed power lines and tree limbs are blocking some roads and minor injuries have been reported.
