An Illinois Senator is calling for the SIU Board of Trustees to have a more strict makeup.
Sen. Bill Haine (D-Alton) has filed legislation that would require three SIU Trustees to be SIU Carbondale Graduates, and three to be SIU Edwardsville graduates. In addition, the bill would give voting privileges to both SIU Student Trustees.
Currently, the Board is made up of eight members: seven of them are appointed by the governor. The student vote rotates between the two campus-elected student trustees.
Sen. Haine was among the Metro East lawmakers upset with Gov. Pat Quinn's decision not to reappoint Trustees Ed Hightower, Roger Simmons, and Mark Hinrichs earlier this week. Both Hightower and Simmons are SIU Edwardsville graduates.
All three of Quinn's new nominees graduated from SIU Carbondale. The Senate rejected those appointments on Wednesday.
If the bill is passed, it would require all current Trustees to be reappointed.
