Williamson County, IL – Shoppers in Williamson County might notice a slightly higher bill at stores starting today, as a new sales tax takes effect.
The 1% sales tax increase on many goods will help fund school construction and maintenance projects in the county, and was approved by voters earlier this spring.
Regional Schools Superintendent Matt Donkin says despite a court challenge, the tax will go into effect today.
The lawsuit aims to stop the tax, saying it was unconstitutionally approved in a primary election rather than a general. County leaders say they did things by the books, and the voters have spoken.
The tax is expected to help local schools build new facilities, retire debt, and eventually lower property taxes in some cases.
