A southern Illinois congressman says he's in favor of putting troops on the ground in Syria to stop ISIS from terrorizing the world any further.
Representative John Shimkus says in the aftermath of the terrorist strike in Paris, the U.S. could join France and other allies in a mission to destroy ISIS where it has its strongest foothold.
"I think it's now understood that we can't have an Islamic, radical caliphate operating as a safe haven to launch terrorist attacks around the world. It's no different than Afghanistan. Why did we go to Afghanistan? Well, the Taliban were there and it was a safe haven."
Shimkus wouldn't say how many U.S. troops he'd be comfortable sending to Syria, but he says the free world cannot allow this reign of terror to continue from what he calls a group of barbarians.
Shimkus says he's co-sponsored a measure in the U.S. House called the Refugee Resettlement Oversight and Security Act.
"It requires affirmative approval by Congress before any refugees are admitted to the United States. So, that would require a vote by us. It would allow us - Congress - to block any inadequate refugee resettlement plan put forward by the President. It requires the administration to prioritize resettlement of oppressed religious minorities."
Republicans in Illinois' Congressional delegation are on board with Governor Bruce Rauner's move to temporarily close the state's borders to Syrian refugees in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris.
