image of the sun

Heat and humidity will dominant through the weekend.  The National Weather Service says we can expect heat index readings as high as 107 degrees through Sunday.

With the high heat and humidity it is important to drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in the shade or an air conditioned room and check on those more susceptible to the heat. The National Weather Service also reminds pet owners to make sure outdoor animals have shade and plenty of fresh water.  Heat Index reading are expected to push above 100 by Friday afternoon.  A heat advisory is in effect for Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening for the entire region.  Heat index readings are expected to reach 107 to 110.

With the excessive heat and humidity expected this weekend,  three organizations in the Carbondale area are working with the Sparrow Coalition to provide a cool space for people in need of somewhere to escape the daytime heat. The Carbondale public library, the University Mall food court, and Good Samaritan Ministries... will all provide a cool place to gather during this weekend's high heat and humidity.

The library is open 9am to 6pm on Saturday and 1pm to 6pm on Sunday.  University Mall is open 10am to 9pm on Saturday and Noon to 5:30pm on Sunday.  Good Samaritan Ministries is open throughout the day and early evenings both Saturday and Sunday. The Sparrow Coalition is a community partnership in Carbondale that seeks to alleviate poverty.
