Rauner Slams House Panel Approval of Childcare Funds

Gov. Bruce Rauner's office says lawmakers' plan to restore cuts to child care services shows Democrats' resolve to "claw their way to a massive tax hike.''
A House committee endorsed a Senate-approved measure Tuesday to restore child care for working parents. Gov. Bruce Rauner severely restricted eligibility on July 1 because there's no state budget.

Democrats who control the General Assembly say subsidizing child care allows working parents to avoid welfare.

Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly says Democrats continue to OK piecemeal spending to force a tax hike to fill the financial hole. Kelly says they are "hamstringing the state,'' which can't afford the formerly generous program.

The House discussed child care in an afternoon whole-house committee hearing, but took no further action.
