Quinn Calls For Budget Cuts

IL Gov. Pat Quinn
IL Gov. Pat Quinn

Governor Pat Quinn says he's prepared to cut the state budget back to levels Illinois hasn't seen in more than four years. The governor delivers his proposed state budget Wednesday. Monday, Quinn said the overall operations budget is lower than Fiscal Year 2008. Quinn says deep cuts are coming, along with pension reform and
restructuring Medicaid.   Quinn says he plans to take nearly 3-billion dollars out of Medicaid - the health care program for the poor.

Quinn has also said Illinois workers may have to pay more into their retirement accounts to ease the state's massive pension burden.  He's also calling for most state offices to cut their budgets by nine percent. Quinn asked most state departments to do the same. However, he says the state's education budget is more than last year's.

One thing the governor has not mentioned is raising income taxes.
