SIU Thrower DeAnna Price placed eighth in Monday’s Olympic Hammer Throw Finals.
The recent SIU-Carbondale graduate qualified for the medal round with a 70.79-meter toss in the qualifier. She finished eighth in Monday’s final with a top throw of 70.95 meters.
The top throw came from Poland’s Anita Wlodarczyk at 82.29 meters – a new world record.
This is Price’s first Olympics, but she’s no stranger to international competition. She’s competed in the Pan Am games, the IAAF World Championships, and holds the current record for a Hammer Throw at the collegiate level.
Price’s SIU teammate, Gwen Berry, didn’t make it to the final round, but threw a 69.9-meter mark to finish 14th in the qualifying round.
