State and local police are beefing up patrols for the holiday weekend.
Illinois state police trooper Emanuel Edwards says drivers are urged to buckle up and drive sober as they celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends.
He says they can expect to see more cops on the roads, roadside safety checks, and other special details.
"Troopers will focus on identifying impaired drivers, distracted driving, they'll be enforcing speed, seatbelt, and move over laws. With your help, we can reduce crashes and save lives during this holiday season."
Seven people died on Illinois roads during the Thanksgiving holiday last year. Three of those fatalities involved a drunk driver.
The enhanced enforcement will last through New Year's Eve.
